After almost four years of collaboration between eight European partners, we achieved the project’s goal of augmenting an aircraft structure with battery energy storage. 🔋

The idea behind the project

Our aim was to integrate next-generation lithium-ion cells directly into composite aeronautical structures so that they could serve both load-bearing and energy storage functions. 

The results

The final result is a multifunctional demonstrator based on a full-scale wingtip designed for the Pipistrel Velis Electro and containing 40 battery cells. This component was put through an extensive testing programme to verify its performance and safety. ✈️

While the project has now come to a close, it marks a significant step towards the next generation of hybrid-electric aviation: lighter, more efficient and more sustainable.
